TAMPA — Boaters will have 30 slips for docking, sunset watching and drinking tropical craft cocktails and local beers when the Getaway bar opens today just across the Gandy Bridge, overlooking Weedon Island Preserve.
"We're right on the Hillsborough-Pinellas border," said owner Dave Burton, who conceived his new venture as "a laid-back, Florida Keys-inspired hangout midway between Tampa and St. Pete."
Urban Kai runs the paddle board launch, supplying boards and instruction. Kayaks are coming soon.
Fridays feature a Mallory Square-type marketplace of arts, crafts, knickknacks and "street performers mingling like you see in Key West," Burton said.
Every month, Full Moon parties will howl with live music, moonshine and moonlight paddle board tours.
Don't go looking for a kitchen. The Getaway will host a variety of food trucks, rotating to provide a range of snacking options.
This weekend's grand opening festivities feature local artists, merchants and music, plus a 4 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday. Cowhead Show 102.5 FM radio personality Spanish will broadcast on site Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. At 8 p.m., the Black Honkeys band rocks the waterfront bar.
Sunday is "Rumday" with discount rum drinks and live music.
The Getaway, 13090 Gandy Blvd. N, St. Petersburg, is open from 11 a.m. to midnight, "subject to change," Burton said. Check thegetawaytampabay.com for updates.
